Supervises the activities of the wastewater treatment personnel in carrying out the required operational and maintenance duties. Also supervises the municipal wastewater treatment plants to insure that the plant effluents meet the state and federal governmental regulations as specified in the issued permits.

With minimum direct supervision, leads the treatment crew in performing required daily tasks. Interfaces with other wastewater department personnel, city administrators, other utility departments and the general public.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Directly supervises the wastewater treatment crew in the required operational and maintenance duties of the wastewater treatment plants
  • Performs annual performance evaluations of each member of the treatment crew.
  • Assists the Wastewater Treatment Foreman in determining the hiring and termination of treatment personnel
  • Assists in preparing annual budgets for the treatment plant.
  • Assists in preparing and maintaining plant records, both operational and regulatory.
  • Directly supervises the required operational laboratory tests.
  • Performs water softener inspections for residents.
  • Performs solid removal from bio solids building.
  • Advises the Wastewater Treatment Foreman of needed maintenance in the plants.
  • Responsible for the implementation of appropriate safety standards.
  • Responsible for the training of new employees assigned to the treatment crew.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Wastewater Treatment Foreman.
  • Duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment principles and to make the necessary adjustments and changes to operational controls as needed.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal Permit requirements.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical components of the wastewater treatment plants.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with management, staff and with the public.
  • Knowledge of implementing an effective composting management program utilizing stable sludge components
  • Knowledge on the Recycle Center Programs
  • Knowledge on curb side chipping


Education/Experience/Certification Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment plants.
  • Grade B Wastewater Certificate.


Physical Job Requirements 

  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to operate machinery and vehicles.
  • Must be able to remove and repair mechanical components of the treatment plant


Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work outdoors and under extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work on-call and to respond to emergencies beyond the normal 40-hour work week.
  • Will work around hazardous chemicals; Must possess knowledge of the various chemicals found in the treatment plant.
  • Will work around loud machinery noise; Must protect from hearing loss associated with this hazard.
