The Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for operations of the water plant and wells in order to ensure that residents have potable water in accordance with federal, state and municipal regulatory, policies and standards.                  

With minimum supervision, work alone or with other members of the treatment crew in performing required daily tasks. Interfaces with other Utility Department personnel, City administrators, other City departments and the general public.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assists in preparing and maintaining plant records, both operational and regulatory.
  2. Performs the required operational laboratory tests.
  3. Performs daily checks of the Water Treatment Plant and well sites.
  4. Advises the Water Treatment Foreman of needed maintenance required at the plant and wells.
  5. Responsible for the implementation of appropriate safety standards.
  6. Performs daily reads on various meters.
  7. Maintain water treatment plant and well facilities and grounds.
  8. Performs control room duties. Monitors the water distribution and pump systems using a computerized SCADA system.
  9. Receives chemical shipments and maintain an inventory of treatment chemicals
  10. Other duties assigned

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of water treatment principles and ability to make the necessary adjustments and changes to operational controls as needed.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal regulations governing the treatment of surface and ground water.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical components of water treatment plants.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read meters, gauges and instruments.
  • Ability to operate and provide technical support of SCADA system.
  • Knowledge of the various chemicals found in the water treatment process.

Education/Experience/Certification Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in operating and maintaining water treatment plants.
  • Grade C Surface Water License
  • Able to obtain Grade B Surface Water License within 18 months
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License

Physical Job Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate machinery and vehicles.
  • Ability to remove and repair mechanical components of the treatment plant.

Working Conditions

  • Outdoors and under extreme weather conditions.
  • Will work on-call and to respond to emergencies beyond the normal 40-hour work week.
  • Will work around hazardous chemicals
  • Will work around loud machinery noise; Must protect from hearing loss associated with this hazard.
